"First off, those were the 60's," explained Val Pipps, about his cross-country trip on the Merry Pranksters bus trip. "The times
were just different. I mainly observed but there are periods that are a total mystery to me still today." But Pipps' strange
journey was not for naught as he later took the nom de plume "Terry Southern" and helped pen "Easy Rider" with Fonda and Hopper based on his experiences.
Rumors persist Fonda based his character in the movie on Pipps.

Pipps to start new career, follow family teaching tradition
As the journalism profession circles the drain, taking with it the hopes and dreams of journalists around the nation, Val Pipps
embarks on a career to teach the profession that will seem "quaint" and "old fashioned" by the time he earns tenure. "I'm thinking of
teaching a course in newspaper management," said Pipps. "How hard can that be? I'll simply walk into the classroom holding a stack of
papers and toss them into the air. Lesson one accomplished."

One late night after deadline during Val's tenure at the Beacon Journal as the weekend editor,
the subject arose of who would be cast in a film about the Beacon Journal. There was only one choice for the actor to play Val -- Robert Duvall from the Apocalypse Now era.
'That's the best you could do?' Pipps asks.
